Clinical Trials in Bulgaria – an interview with Martin Kosturski

The international clinical research platform Pratia opens a new research center in Plovdiv. It is the 22nd for the company in Bulgaria and covers 18 Therapeutic Areas, including Oncology and Oncohematology. This is a big step for Pratia, and thanks to this new Research Site & Oncology Unit, Patients in the country will have more access to innovative care. We sat down with Martin Kosturski, MD – Country Head of Bulgaria, to talk about his perspective on the role of Bulgaria in Clinical Trials.

Pratia: What is the climate in Bulgaria in Clinical Trials? According to the INFARMA report* Bulgaria is ranked 13th in Europe. What is your comment on this?

Martin Kosturski: It gives me great pleasure to lead my country to a high position among much larger and economically better-represented countries. This place means we only have 12 more places to go to the top as the best country to conduct Clinical Trials! We should all benefit from this industry and help more Patients in Bulgaria.

Pratia: Over 60% of Bulgarians know the term Clinical Trials. How can we use this knowledge and convert Motivations into better Patient Recruitment Strategies?

Martin Kosturski: It's great that more than half of Bulgarians know about Clinical Trials. This means Bulgarians are inquisitive and always want to be treated with the best innovative therapy. By offering them more interesting and necessary Clinical Trials, we will have more patients with adequate treatment for their diseases.

Pratia: Pratia Bulgaria covers 70% of BG territory giving access to innovative care for Bulgarians who do not have to travel, especially to Sofia. What's next?

Martin Kosturski: Our strategy covers large regional cities so Patients from smaller cities can also access innovative therapy seen in the last ten years. The decentralization of Clinical Trials will allow us to have 100% of the Bulgarian population.

Pratia: Our company in Bulgaria offers Oncology studies in the Embedded Hospital Model and new exclusive Research Site & Oncology Unit in the country's center in Plovdiv? Why Plovdiv? What are the benefits for Patients, PIs, and Sponsors?

Martin Kosturski: Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria with good medical care. Our advantage is that we can offer a much faster addition of innovative therapy to Patients in Plovdiv and the district without administrative burden. The Pratia Plovdiv Medical Center is located in the same building as the emergency medical center, which guarantees patient safety.

Pratia: How does Pratia solve the challenges that global and local Sponsors and CROs face?

Martin Kosturski: Pratia is quite a flexible company, and we strive to be adequate to the demand of CROs and Sponsors. By offering the Pratia Plovdiv Medical Center a location with excellent administrative service, adequate medical care, and accessibility for many patients, we achieve everything the CRO and Sponsors need.
